Frequently Asked Questions

Which states make up the GLR?

There are six states in the GLR: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin

What’s the difference between AMTA, GLR, and the state organizations?

Each state in the GLR has its own organization, continuing education opportunities, and task force working for state recognition of music therapy. There is reciprocity amongst states in the GLR for continuing education opportunities. You need to become a member of your state’s organization separately from AMTA and GLR to access these opportunities.

GLR is one of the seven regions that make up AMTA. GLR leadership consists of a representative from each state organization as well as an executive committee and standing committee representatives.

AMTA is our national music therapy organization. If you are a member of AMTA, you are automatically a member of GLR and can hold office in GLR, serve on a Standing Committee, and run for the Assembly of Delegates.

What are the benefits of being a member of GLR? What does GLR do?

Becoming a member of AMTA and therefore, GLR, has several benefits. Members can apply for scholarships, including the Student Access Fund, the MUSE Fund, and Research Fund. GLR offers a Mentoring Program that is available to members.  Members are able to vote, hold office on the Executive Committee, and serve on the Assembly of Delegates and AMTA Standing Committees.

The GLR is a vibrant, active music therapy community where you can connect with colleagues and receive information and support. Our regional conferences are extensive and well-attended. GLR is well-represented on the Assembly of Delegates and has a voice at the AMTA level. Our GLR DEI Committee holds a book club and hosts talks.  We host roundtables and give regular community updates. We are guided by our commitment to education, accountability, belonging, community, growth, and integrity.

What about students? How do we fit into the GLR?

If you are a student (undergraduate or graduate) in the GLR, you can join the GLR-AMTAS.  To be a part of the national AMTAS, students must be members of AMTA.  This allows students to serve on the AMTAS board and to serve on AMTA Standing Committees as a student liaison.  GLR-AMTAS has resources for the student community and is currently working on resources for interns.
